Eli Terry Jr. Middle School is kicking off a Bicycle program this month! The school has recieved 20 Specialized bikes through the PEP Grant and they will be used in wellness classes as well as a new Bike Club! All of the students and staff are excited to get out and ride! All of our bicycles were purchased through Benidorm Bikes in Canton, CT and ETJMS and Healthy & Fit 4 Life would like to thank Benidorm Bikes for their help and support!
As part of Every Kid Healthy Week through Action for Healthy Kids, Harry S. Fisher Elementary School held a Walk to School Day in April. Students were dropped off by car or bus at Baldwin Park in Terryville and walked to school with their teacher and staff members. The weather was great and it was a lot of fun! Healthy & FIt 4 Life and HSF Elementary would like to thank Officer Walsh and the Plymouth Police Department for keeping us safe during our walk to school!
Last month two of our staff members attended the Action Based Learning Institute presented by Jean Blaydes Madigan in San Diego. Action Based Learning is based on the neuroscience behind the statement "exercise grows brain cells." Jean is an expert in the topic and presents information on how movement affects the brain as well as strategies to implement the more movement into the school day to positively influence academic performance. Stephanie Konopaske (ETJMS Wellness) and Angie Suffridge (ETJMS Administration) have already implemented the program at the middle school with the math department, are working with elementary teachers to build a foundation, and are planning further professional development for additional district staff. The fitness labs at the middle and high schools are up and running! Students and staff have access to the fitness centers during classes as well as after school. Both centers include state-of-the-art equipment paired with ground-breaking technology to give our students an A+ fitness experience! The new equipment has been delivered, assembled, and installed at the high school - we now rival any local gym! Mrs. Farrington and Mr. Sconziano can't wait to get their classes in and using the fitness center! |
